African Violet Pots-different types and their benefits
African violet pots are specialized containers specifically designed for growing African Violets, a type of flowering plant that is native to tropical parts of Africa. The pot design helps create an optimal environment for the African Violets by allowing air circulation and keeping the soil moist but not too wet.
The use of African Violet pots is recommended when growing African Violets to give the plants the best chance of thriving. Design of these pots helps keep the soil evenly moist and allows air circulation, which is essential for healthy roots. They also provide better drainage than traditional containers, making it easier to avoid over-watering and root rot.
The use of African Violet pots provides many benefits for African Violets, including:
– Increased air circulation
– Improved drainage to avoid over-watering and root rot
– More even soil moisture levels
– Easier maintenance due to the specialized shape of the pot
Overall, using a pot beneficial to your African Violet is a great way to give your plants the best chance of thriving and enjoying a healthy, beautiful life. With the right soil, light, and moisture, these pots can help bring out the beauty in any African Violet!
Plastic African Violet Pots
Plastic pots are a popular choice for growing African Violets. These lightweight containers are much easier to move and clean than ceramic or clay pots, and offer excellent drainage. They can be found in many sizes and shapes to suit the needs of any gardener, making them a great option for those just starting with African Violets.
However, be sure to choose a plastic pot with enough drainage holes to prevent over-watering and root rot. It is also important not to let the soil dry out too much in between waterings as this can cause problems such as wilting or yellowing of leaves. With proper care and attention, plastic pots can provide an excellent home for African Violets.
Terracotta Pots
Terracotta pots are another popular choice for growing African Violets. These traditional clay pots provide excellent drainage and they allow the soil to “breathe”, which is important for healthy roots. Terracotta can be a good choice for beginners who are tempted to overwater their African Violets. The clay pots will allow water to evaporate more quickly from the soil thus deterring the problem of overwatering. They also come in a variety of sizes and shapes, allowing you to choose the perfect pot for your plants.
However, terracotta pots can be fragile and heavy when filled with soil. They also overtime will accumulate the minerals and salts in water, soil and fertilizer. This can also accumulate around the rim of the pot, then when the leaves touch the salty rim they will die. You can avoid this by wrapping the rim of the pot with plastic or foil. You can even dip the rim of the pot in paraffin wax, although mold can accumulate under the paraffin so you need to keep an eye on this. It is also important to remember that terracotta will eventually absorb some of the moisture from the soil, which means you may need to water more often.
Although terracotta do not work well for water wicking as the pot tends to absorb the water quicker than it can be drawn up through the wick. The color of the terracotta pot be changed by the minerals it soaks up and can even grow mold so frequent cleaning will be needed.
Ceramic African Violet Pot
Glazed ceramic pots provide a stylish and vibrant way to show off your African Violets. These containers come in a variety of colors and designs, adding beauty and character to any home. Although they are more expensive than plastic or terracotta, glazed ceramic pots can last for many years with the proper care.
These come with a ceramic outer pot and an inner porous pot that absorbs water to keep the soil moist.
The glazed ceramic outer pot is also waterproof, making it a great choice for those who want to avoid frequent watering. These ceramic pots come in a variety of color and will fit beautifully in any decor.

African Violet Self Watering Pot
For gardeners who don’t have time to water their African Violets often, self-watering pots can provide a convenient solution. These specialized containers come with an internal reservoir of water that slowly releases moisture into the soil as needed, helping to ensure that plants stay hydrated even when you’re away from home.
Self-watering pots are also great for those who tend to forget to water their plants. The built-in system helps ensure that your African Violets stay healthy even when you’re not around. However, be sure to monitor the water levels in the reservoir as these containers can become over-saturated if left unchecked.
Water-Wicking African Violet Pot
These specialized containers have a built-in system that draws moisture up from the reservoir below and into the soil, providing consistent hydration to your plants.
Water-wicking pots are also great for busy gardeners who don’t have time to water their plants frequently. The built-in wicking system takes care of the watering for you, helping ensure that your African Violets stay hydrated and healthy even when you’re away from home. However, be sure to monitor the water levels in the reservoir to offer consistent water for your violets.
DIY African Violet Pots
Below is a description of how I create my own DIY water-wicking African Violet pots and even create the perfect color of pot to match the bloom of my Violet!
Create your own Water Wicking Pots
If you want to DIY your water-wicking pot for African Violets, all you need is a plastic pot and a glass bowl vase to hold the water. Just make sure the plastic pot is larger than the opening on the glass bowl so the pot does not sit in water and the roots become saturated. I cover the bottom of my pot with a screen disc so that the dirt doesn’t come out in your water reservoir. For my wick I use acrylic yarn that I cut long enough to come halfway up my pot and down into the water. I even color my vases with alcohol ink to give each one its unique color and help curb algae growth. The picture below shows a few of my DIY water-wicking pots.
