Creating a Patio Butterfly Garden

Choosing the Right Containers

Don’t Forget the Water!

  1. Choose a Shallow Dish: Butterflies prefer shallow water, so use a small dish, like a saucer or a shallow birdbath. The water should not be deep, as butterflies like to rest on the edges while drinking.
  2. Add Sand or Stones: Line the bottom of the dish with sand, stones, or gravel. This helps butterflies land safely and drink without getting their wings wet.
  3. Water Source: Add just enough water to moisten the sand or stones. You don’t need to fill the dish entirely; the goal is to keep the surface damp.
  4. Salt and Minerals: Butterflies are attracted to the minerals found in natural puddles. You can add a pinch of salt or a small amount of dissolved fertilizer to the water to mimic the nutrients found in the wild.

Hanging Basket with Helichrysum, Fuchsia, and Nemesia

For a dynamic, colorful hanging basket, consider a combination of Helichrysum petiole aureus, fuchsia, and nemesia in red, yellow, and orange. Start with three Helichrysum petiole aureus as a trailing element. The silvery, soft foliage creates a beautiful backdrop for the brighter blooms. Add one fuchsia to bring in eye-catching pink or purple flowers. Finally, fill in the gaps with four nemesias in bold red, yellow, and orange shades. This mix works well in shaded or partially sunny spots, where the fuchsia will thrive and the nemesia will bring a lively burst of color.
